Purpose of AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps brings people together to tackle some of the county’s most pressing challenges through service all around the nation and volunteering. AmeriCorps members serve with organizations dedicated to the improvement of communities. We are uniting America by bringing people together to serve communities. AmeriCorps helps make service a cornerstone of our national culture. Through our nation’s most trying times, Americorps has come together to help those in need.
The member must complete the term of service successfully as defined by the program and consistent with regulations of AmeriCorps and to be eligible for the education award, he/she must complete the duration of their service.

Education Award. Upon successful completion of the member’s term of service, the member will receive an education award from the National Service Trust. The education award can be used to pay education cost at qualified institutions of higher education (i.e. tuition, fees, etc.), to pay for educational training (i.e. non-degree programs such as technical or vocational training), and to repay qualified student loans (generally federal student loans, NOT private loans).
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
The NCSA states that allowances, earnings, and payments to participants in AmeriCorps programs “shall not be considered income for the purposes of determining eligibility for and the amount income transfer and in-kind aid furnished under any Federal or federally-assisted program based on need, other than as provided in the Social Security Act.” The USDA issued an opinion in 2001 stating that AmeriCorps State and National benefits are excluded from income for food stamp purposes. A memberʻs SNAP benefits are not affected because a member receives the AmeriCorps living allowance.

Eligibility:
- Must be at least 17 years of age
- High School diploma or equivalent or be in the process of obtaining one.
- Be a citizen, National or Lawful Permanent Resident alien of the United States.
- Pass National Background check.
General Statement of Duties:
In support of the mission of Papahana Kuaola, the AmeriCorps Kahua ʻAi member will cultivate and take care of ʻāina and the maintenance of equipment and facilities for Papahana Kuaola. This position supports the continual improvement of learning spaces in order to positively impact kanaka and ʻāina in alignment with the mission and goals of the organization.
Duties Include:
- Maintain and improve facilities including warehouse, office, sheds and lawns to organizational expectations:
- Maintain and repair warehouse and office equipment
- Maintain lawns and access points for staff and community members
- Create space for cultural exchange and learning opportunities
- Maintain and repair landscaping equipment and tools to organizational expectations.
- Attend safety training in using landscaping tools, machinery and equipment
- Maintain, expand and improve ʻāina to organizational expectations:
- Support farming work in loʻi and māla through prepping ʻāina, planting, weeding, popo’i, huki, kohi, etc.
- Support Stream Restoration work through eradicate invasive species and native plant restoration
- Support Agroforestry work through eradicate invasive species and native plant restoration
- Ensure accurate data entry and evaluation of all surveys conducted
- Participate in online learning activities videos on our website and social media platforms
- Comply with all AmeriCorps program guidelines by maintaining service hours, training hours, and service projects as outlined in the AmeriCorps Service Agreement.
- Member is required to wear the Americorps logo daily
- Interact in a positive, professional and cooperative manner with the community and Papahana Kuaola staff; refer appropriate questions or concerns to AmeriCorps Program Coordinator.
- Attend all required training courses and staff meetings and participate in AmeriCorps service projects.
- Willingness and ability to be cross trained and fill in where directed to ensure quality care of Papahana Kuaola. This includes but is not limited to assisting with community volunteers.
- Maintain clear, positive communication with Papahana Kuaola staff to ensure smooth operation of programs and assists with community members in a caring and positive manner.
- Understand and promote the Mission and Vision of Papahana Kuaola that values cultivation of ʻāina and people to nurture learning, relationships, and lifestyles that enable all Hawaiʻi to thrive.
